The use of dental floss and interdental brushes is key to maintaining oral hygiene, but many people are unsure when to use these tools. Are they more effective before or after brushing? Let’s look at the different aspects!
Why is it important to clean between your teeth?
Brushing alone is not enough because a toothbrush cannot reach the areas between the teeth. Dental floss and interdental brushes help remove plaque and food debris from these hard-to-reach areas, thus preventing tooth decay and gum inflammation.
Should you use dental floss and interdental brushes before or after brushing your teeth?
- Before brushing: Some experts believe that it is best to use dental floss or interdental brushes first, as this loosens plaque and food debris stuck between the teeth, making it easier to remove during brushing.
- After brushing: Others believe that flossing after brushing ensures that fewer bacteria remain in the mouth and that cleaning is even more effective. This is especially true if you also use mouthwash afterwards.
Floss or interdental brush – which is better?
The choice depends on the condition of your teeth and your individual needs. Dental floss is ideal for cleaning narrow spaces between teeth, while interdental brushes can be more effective for wider spaces or when you have dentures or braces. Ideally, both should be used to achieve the best results.
The correct use of dental floss and interdental brushes
Using dental floss: Cut off about 40 cm of dental floss, wrap it around your fingers, and gently insert it between your teeth. Move it carefully up and down along the tooth surfaces without damaging the gums. Using interdental brushes: Choose a brush of the appropriate size and gently insert it between your teeth. Move it back and forth without pressing too hard on the gums. Don’t forget all the interdental spaces! Work tooth by tooth, making sure to clean every part thoroughly. Rinse your mouth! After cleaning, rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash for complete freshness and hygiene.
